Lyrics of '85: 19 - Paul Hardcastle

In 1965, Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war
But it wasn't
It was different in many ways, and so were those who did the fighting
In World War II, the average age of the combat soldier was 26
In Vietnam, he was 19
In ininininininin Vietnam he was 19
In ininininininin Vietnam he was 19
In ininininininin Vietnam he was 19
Na-na-na-na-na-19

(The heaviest fighting of the past two weeks continued today 25 miles northwest of Saigon)

(*I wasn't really sure what was going on*)

Ni-ninininininin-nineteen. Ni-ninininininin-nineteen
19, 19, 19, 19

In Vietnam, the combat soldier typically served a 12 month tour of duty
But was exposed to hostile fire almost every day
Ni-ninininininin-nineteen. Ni-nininininin-nineteen

Lyrics of '85: Smuggler's Blues - Glenn Frey

There's trouble on the streets tonight
I can feel it in my bones
I had a premonition
that he should not go alone
I knew the gun was loaded
But I didn't think he'd kill
Everything exploded
And the blood began to spill

So baby here's your ticket
Put the suitcase in your hand
Here's a little money now
Do it just the way we planned
You be cool for 20 hours
And I'll pay you 20 grand
I'm sorry it went down like this
And someone had to lose
It's the nature of the business
It's the smuggler's blues
The rest and a live performance (can't find a video with audio)

Lyrics of '85:  Smooth Operator - Sade

He's laughing with another girl
And playing with another heart
Placing high stakes, making hearts ache
He's loved in seven languages

Jewel box life, diamond nights and ruby lights
High in the sky
Heaven help him
When he falls

Diamond life, lover boy
He moves in space with minimum waste and maximum joy
City lights and business nights
When you require street car desire for higher heights

Lyrics of '85: Centerfield - John Fogerty

Well, beat the drum and hold the phone -- the sun came out today
We're born again, there's new grass on the field
A-roundin' third and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man
Anyone can understand the way I feel

Oh, put me in, coach -- I'm ready to play today

Put me in, coach -- I'm ready to play today
Look at me, I can be centerfield

Lyrics of '85: Sugar Walls - Sheena Easton

My sugar walls

My sugar walls

Where I come from there's a place called heaven

That's the place where all the good children go
The houses are of silver, the streets of gold
But there's more where you come from my sugar walls

My sugar walls

My sugar walls

Blood races to your private spots

Let's me know there's a fire
You can't fight passion when passion is hot
Temperatures rise inside my sugar walls

Lyrics of '85: Turn Up The Radio - Autograph

Ooh yeah

Turn it up
Come on
I'm working hard, you're working too
We do it every day
For every minute I have to work
I need a minute of play
Day in, day out, all week long
Things go better with rock
The only time I turn it down
Is when I'm sleepin' it off
Turn up the radio
I need the music, give me some more
Turn up the tape machine
I wanna feel it and you know what I mean
The rest and the video.

From January 3-8, Prince and the Revolution played at The Omni in Atlanta as part of the Purple Rain Tour.  Prince was at the peak of his popularity at this point with "Purple Rain" and "I Would Die 4 U" on the charts and "Take Me With U" about to be released. With "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" already huge hits, this was the soundtrack to just about everything that happened in life at the time, from waiting at the bus stop to dates with my girlfriend.
