Movies in the news '85: Steven Spielberg's "The Color Purple" leads Christmas movie releases by averaging $9,000 in the 192 theaters in which it appeared over the Dec. 20-22 weekend. The movie is also named Best Picture of 1985 by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. Whoopi Goldberg is named best actress. William Hurt and Raul Julia share the award for best actor for "Kiss of the Spider Woman".

Movies in the news '85:  "Clue," a movie based on the well-known board game makes its debut on Dec. 13, 1985. The ensemble cast features Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock), Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White), Christopher Lloyd (Professor Plum), Michael McKean (Mr. Green), Martin Mull (Col. Mustard) and Lesley Ann Warren (Miss Scarlet). The movie features three alternate endings and different theaters received different endings. Reviews were mixed and "Clue" didn't do well at the box office, but later gained a cult following.

'85 Forgotten movie of the month: The movie from 1985 starring Steve Guttenberg that wasn't "Cocoon" or one of the "Police Academy" movies, "Bad Medicine" is a comedy about a pre-med student trying to live up to his family's medical history but unable to get into a decent school. He instead attends a down-and-out medical school "somewhere in Central America." Also starring Alan Arkin and Julie Hagerty ('80s fans will also recognize notables from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Revenge of the Nerds," and "Hannah and Her Sisters").

'85 forgotten movie of the month: A personal favorite, "After Hours," is a black comedy, starring Griffin Dunne as Paul Hackett, a word processor trying with no success to get home one night from New York's SoHo district. The Martin Scorsese-directed movie is a paranoia cult classic.


Movies in the news '85: Oct. 26, 1985 is a significant date in two movies. In "Back To the Future," Oct. 26, 1985 is the date when Marty and Doc arrive at the Twin Pines Mall to carry out their time travel experiment. In the 1992 movie "Death Becomes Her," October 26, 1985 is the date Helen (Goldie Hawn) drinks the eternal youth potion. Both movies are directed by Robert Zemeckis.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "The Bride" is an adaptation of "Frankenstein" and starred Sting as Frankenstein and Jennifer Beals as Eva, the ideal female mate Frankenstein created for his monster. The fantasy film received virtually universally poor reviews and Beals was nominated for a Razzie as worst actress.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "Red Sonja" marked the film debut of Brigitte Nielsen as the title character of a sword-wielding Amazonian who battles the evil Queen Gedren, avenges her family's death and saves the world. Universally panned and criticized, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played Lord Kalidor, has called it "the worst film I ever made." However, a second Red Sonja movie has been in the works for years.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "Return To Oz" was billed as a sequel to the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy returns to Oz and finds it destroyed. With the help of characters Tik-Tok and Jack Pumpkinhead, they restore the land of Oz to the way it was. The movie was based loosely on a couple of L. Frank Baum "Oz" books, but did not fair well at the box office. It later drew a cult following among Oz followers.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "Rappin'" was a drama starring Mario Van Peebles as a break dancer and ex-con who is trying to save his neighborhood from developers and other no-gooders while trying to win a rap contest. The movie, which also features Eriq La Salle, Kadeem Hardison and Ice-T, as himself, gained a small cult following, despite its relatively poor quality.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "The Slugger's Wife" was a Neil Simon movie about a baseball player from the Atlanta Braves, played by Michael O'Keefe, who falls in love with a rock singer, played by Rebecca DeMornay. The movie, which also starred Randy Quaid, was a huge flop, and known as one of the worst modern baseball movies ever made.

'85 forgotten movie of the month: "Mischief" was a teen comedy starring Doug McKeon, Chris Nash, Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelly Preston. Set in 1956, the movie recounted McKeon's character's attempts to win over Preston's sexy character. It was Preston's first prominent film role. She would later go on to star in movies like "Twins," "Jerry Maguire," and "Battlefield Earth."

She is probably most known now to horror movie fans as the ex-wife of the Jigsaw killer in the Saw movies
